Finding the cause of death includes gathering data, interviewing witnesses, and evaluating evidence. The following information begins with a comprehensive description of the steps involved in the investigation and why they are important. Then we present a more thorough description of the most common causes of sudden death in groups of beef cattle in California. Finally, we offer a few examples of how this information can help identify possible causes of death.
This publication guides users on how to use the provided data collection form in an investigation of sudden death for beef cattle herds (appendix A). The completed form can be shared with a veterinarian, livestock advisor, or diagnostic lab to ensure they have all the information necessary to assist in determining the cause of death.
